A doctor's superstition and the day the world shut down

In March 2020, as an eye doctor, I eagerly anticipated the year ahead, as 2020 held a special significance for us. On one particular day, everything seemed to be going well. I had the pleasure of hearing a heartwarming story from a patient about their grandchild, and then another patient arrived with a peculiar problem of glue stuck in both eyes. Fortunately, I was able to assist her and send her home relieved and glue-free.

During lunch with my assistant Mike, amidst his enjoyment of chicken wings, conversation turned to the emerging threat of a new virus. While others worried about catching the coronavirus, my only concern was enjoying a Corona beer, reflecting on the irony of it being Friday the 13th. Despite being a doctor, I couldn't shake off the superstitions instilled in me by my mother. So, to err on the side of caution, I decided to reschedule Patient 13, opting instead for Patient 8, a number considered lucky in Chinese culture. However, luck wasn't on our side, as by the following Monday, the pandemic had forced us to close our office doors.
