Addressing the mental health crisis in America

We are acutely aware of the widespread prevalence of psychiatric illnesses and behavioral disorders. Approximately 20 percent of the population, which translates to roughly 58 million individuals, grapple with underlying psychiatric disorders. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, around 1 in 10 people reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression. However, in the aftermath of the pandemic, this figure has skyrocketed to approximately 40 percent of the population.

Alarmingly, we have observed a significant rise in suicide rates, reaching 49,000 cases last year, and a staggering 111,000 overdose-related deaths. These "deaths of despair" have taken a heavy toll, causing the average lifespan in the United States to decrease from 79 years to 76 years for the first time since the 1920s.

It is crucial to understand that psychiatric illness rarely occurs in isolation. Conditions such as depression often coexist with other health issues such as stroke, diabetes, and heart disease. Consequently, maintaining good physical health is inextricably linked to promoting mental well-being.
