Behind the scenes: A physician’s struggle with documentation #shorts

My days are filled with taking care of patients and talking to their families. But, as you may have noticed, not all of my time is spent on these tasks. In fact, several other important responsibilities come with being a healthcare professional. One of the most important of these is documentation.

We are required to document everything we do for our patients. This includes everything from their medical history and symptoms, to our observations and treatment plans. To make this process as efficient as possible, we use computers in each exam room.

For example, when caring for a well child, I start by pulling up the well child template note. From there, I fill in the fields specific to the patient. This might include their name, age, and other important details. But, this process is not without its challenges. There is a lot of clicking that has to be done, and this takes time away from spending with the patient.

Although there are some workarounds to make this easier, it takes a lot of clicks and takes time. And this is time that I'm facing the computer in the room rather than facing the patient.
