Mentorship primarily involves seeking guidance from someone who has undergone similar experiences. For instance, as a family doctor, if a student aspires to become one, mentorship would entail me sharing my personal experiences, offering advice, and outlining steps to help them progress in their career.
On the other hand, coaching takes a different approach. It refrains from directing someone on what to do and instead involves a collaborative process, irrespective of whether the coach shares the same experiences. In coaching, the focus is on defining clear goals for the individual's future. I ask a series of probing questions, such as their desired specialty and the reasons behind their choices. Essentially, coaching involves drawing out their aspirations and ambitions.
