To create real change in healthcare, we need to start with a burning platform. We need to clearly communicate what we're striving for: team-based care and patient-centered care. And we need to engage everyone in the organization, from physicians to support staff, in the process.
One way to do this is through managed walking rounds, engaging people where they work and understanding their frustrations and concerns. But we also need to pick our fights wisely. Not every battle is worth fighting, and we need to focus on creating a workplace that feels like home - a place where people can be listened to, treated with respect, and feel safe.
It's not just up to administrative leadership to tell a better story. Physician leadership, both formal and informal, plays a critical role in creating a positive work environment. By committing to patient-centered care, focusing on team-based approaches, and treating everyone with respect, we can create a healthcare system that truly works for everyone.
