From ER to office: Impact on pediatric care

It's become apparent to me that there is a significant number of children who are not attending school, despite claims of homeschooling to the school district. In reality, these children are missing out because their parents face challenges in getting them to school due to limited resources.

During my time in the ER, I encountered numerous cases that shed light on this issue. For instance, when examining a child with obesity and delving into their dietary habits, it became evident that access to fresh fruits and vegetables was severely limited. In such circumstances, the only viable option was the local corner store, which often lacks nutritious options. Consequently, families struggling with financial constraints frequently resorted to less expensive but unhealthy choices like frozen pizza. These were the kinds of situations I frequently encountered in the emergency department, even when patients were there for low acuity issues.
