Physician self-care: Preventing burnout and rediscovering passion

It's crucial for us as physicians to prioritize self-care, even though it might sound like a cliché. Engaging in activities such as traveling, reading, immersing ourselves in the arts, music, or any other passion of ours is essential. Without this self-care, we risk burnout, a state many of us are teetering on the edge of, if not already experiencing.

We must reignite our passion for our work. Personally, I still maintain that enthusiasm because I cherish the unique stories of each of my patients. I genuinely love hearing their stories. People often wonder how I've remained a rheumatologist for so long, and my answer is simple: it's because every story is different. Every patient presents with a unique set of challenges and a distinct narrative.

We must invest the time to uncover the stories behind our patients. They are not just cases of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or type two diabetes. Each one has their own narrative, and it's our duty as healthcare professionals to connect with those stories. This connection makes our work more meaningful and enriching as human beings.

Humeira Badsha is a rheumatologist.
