I've considered writing not just to be therapeutic but actually to be an academic pursuit within medicine. And I think I always keep that front and center for anyone out there, particularly a physician writer. The fact is that what we do is as academic, a profession as people who are working in a lab understanding the genetics of disease.
To people who are conducting epidemiologic studies, we have to be careful to guard that professionalism in how we approach, for example, narrative medicine and make sure that we remind people that it's just as academic a pursuit as anything else.
