As mental health and medical professionals, it's crucial that we prioritize our self-care in order to stay present and curious with our clients. This allows us to treat the person, not just the condition.
Having experience with a condition is certainly an asset, but when combined with poor self-care, we may fall prey to the "top-down process." This psychological term refers to how our prior knowledge, expectations, and experiences can unconsciously influence what we hear from our clients.
Instead of truly listening and being open to what our clients are saying, poor self-care can lead us to jump to conclusions and make assumptions that may not be accurate.
