Boundaries mean I want to be in a relationship with you, even if you are an organization. And so I need to define what's OK and what's not for you. And so I help physicians develop scripts about how to do that and weigh the pros and cons so they can really practice that because it is not something that's encouraged.
Physicians are taught to be boundaryless, so now all of a sudden, they're having to unlearn that. And even asking for small things, like not being double booked right before their lunch hour so they could do some charting so that they could actually go and get a walk or take a break.
Amy King is a psychologist.
