Supportive workplace culture beyond pizza parties

Institutions have often adhered to the approach of letting individuals fend for themselves while offering a token reward, like a pizza party, in the hopes of alleviating their stress. However, when we recognize the inherent difficulty of the work at hand, institutions bear a responsibility, if not a moral obligation, to provide strategies that address this challenge. Consider healthcare debriefings as a straightforward yet purposeful example – they carve out intentional, dedicated time for healthcare providers to openly discuss the impact of their work, which is undeniably significant.

By implementing such practices, the culture within these institutions undergoes a transformation. It shifts the onus from blaming individuals for not attending yoga classes to acknowledging the inherent hardships of the work. This normalization fosters an environment where people can openly discuss their experiences, realizing that they are not alone in their struggles. This, in turn, creates an avenue for social support to flourish.
