I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have discovered a profession that I am truly passionate about. My deep satisfaction lies in the field of surgery, more specifically, in the realm of bariatric surgery where I work closely with patients struggling not only with weight management but also grappling with a host of other medical issues.
Recently, our program coordinator put up a board in our office dedicated to celebrating the victories that extend beyond mere numbers on a scale. These are what we call "non-weight victories." One notable entry from a patient caught my eye: "I've successfully discontinued my insulin and diabetic medications." The last line on the board read, "I've been given a second chance at life."
This, in essence, encapsulates why we do what we do. The most profound compliment a patient can offer is the acknowledgment that we've afforded them a fresh start and the gift of a new life.
Every action we take in our profession is driven by the noble goal of enhancing the quality of life for our patients, providing them with newfound opportunities, and the sense of fulfillment that comes from knowing we've made a difference. It is a deeply rewarding pursuit, and I feel privileged to be a part of it.
