Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is a term that refers to the various types of childhood trauma and family-level risk factors that can have a negative impact on a child's physical, emotional, and mental health. These experiences include child maltreatment, abuse, neglect, as well as household risk factors such as parental divorce, mental health and substance use issues.
Population-level studies have shown that an accumulation of early life stressors can significantly increase the risk for various health problems in adulthood. This is why understanding and addressing ACEs is important in promoting and maintaining overall health.
ACEs affect not only individuals but entire communities and society. Identifying ACEs and addressing them can prevent negative outcomes and help create a healthier and more resilient society.
